193015 * Brief History of Banned Music

For the most part - there technically is no such thing as "music censorship" in the United States.
Censorship is a pretty harsh word - especially when it comes to popular music in the United States. Many musicial artists have gotten a great deal of mileage out of claiming to be "censored" by radio stations, religious and community groups, retailers - and even their own record labels. They claim their rights have been violated. The First Amendment to the U.S. Consitution, the amendment that deals with freedom of speech, reads as follows: Congress shall make no law representing an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free excercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or of the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Notice that the law applies to "the Government," and not to community or religious groups, and especially not to record companies.
