The Civilized Explorer

Many of us like to travel and explore the world around us. Some might like to rough it on adventures, others prefer ecotours with operators concerned about conserving our environment, and still others might prefer the comforts of civilization. (Of course, many vacations will include all of these.) We hope that this page will serve as a jumping off point for many Civilized Explorers.

Picture of woman strolling on the beach at Bas du Fort. Where would you like to go?

Our preferences are for the more relaxed vacation, where we might stay in a nice air conditioned hotel and eat wonderful meals in world class restaurants after a hard day on the beach. We like visiting Guadeloupe, French West Indies; this mother is walking with her daughter on the beach at Bas du Fort. Nice shady palms, sunny skies, and a bar right behind your photographer. Ahhh! What more could one ask?
Thailand's celebration of the Golden Anniversary of the accession of King Bhumibol Adulyadej to the throne ends this year. We hope that you will have planned for a visit to Thailand to participate in the celebration. Take a look at The Civilized Explorer Asia Travel Information Page for more information and for links. Special rates and special packages are available until the end of this year.
For the adventurous, we have links in the Adventure Travel Page to adventure tours in Thailand, where you may choose between jungle, beach, and ocean for your adventure.

You've had vacations before -- now it's time to explore!

Traveling for business?Big fluffy clouds over ocean sunset

The Civilized Explorer Travel Information Page has loads of business- related links to places, maps, news, and general guides for planning your trip. Need business connections in Latin America? A new site provides you with face to face meetings with bankers, accountants, lawyers, and government representatives. Need to establish a business presence in Europe? We have links to web servers to give you virtual presence. The Pacific rim has become a hotbed of Internet activity. We have additional sources for business and leisure travel to Asia and Oceania. The TIP covers the world.

If you are going abroad for your vacation or for business, be sure you read "If You Have Problems Overseas" on the Travel Information Page. Tips on how to avoid trouble, who to call if you do get into trouble, and what your embassy will not be able do for you. This information is from the U.S. and U.K. embassies, but it applies to travelers from other countries other as well. Very helpful.

Palm trees on a beach Like tropical islands?

Our favorite travel spots are three of the islands in the French West Indies. These pages provide pictures and descriptions of hotels, restaurants, and beaches, and useful information for planning a trip to Guadeloupe, St. Barth, or Martinique. Guadeloupe and Martinique are wonderfully lush tropical islands with rain forests for you to explore without destroying either the habitat or the inhabitants. You can climb active volcanoes, hike in the jungles, swim in clear seas, and then return to your air conditioned room, shower, have a drink, and dine in some of the best restaurants in the world.
NEW!To print pages that have dark backgrounds, choose the TEXT page from the tops of the documents. For text only with quicker downloads on slow connections, use the text version. The Site TOC at the tops of documents brings you to the Table of Contents for the entire site -- convenient for jumping quickly from page to page.
