On January 7, 1979, Vietnamese troops seized the Cambodian capitol of Phnom Penh, forcing the ouster of Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge, a regime with a legacy of genocide. Fear of such an invasion helped his Communist party stage a coup in 1975, devastating the country.
